Place: Lincoln Trail District Health Department

Elizabethtown, KY 42702
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Dentists and dental auxiliaries who participate in patient treatment will encounter a wide variety of pathological conditions. Unfortunately, the cause of the problem may not immediately be apparent. Therefore, it has become critical that all caregivers have the skills necessary to quickly determine significant from insignificant disease.
This three hour interactive program is not a classic review of specific oral lesions. Rather, a simple, logical approach to decision making is demonstrated. Then through role playing exercises, participants learn to apply this process. They analyze specific aspects of appearance, historical data and tissue changes associated with a sampling of diseases. Depending upon the experience of the clinician, this evaluative process often brings one immediately to the correct diagnosis. However, in those cases where the cause is less apparent, the clinician will have gained a sufficient understanding of the disease to prescribe appropriate follow up care.
GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of the program the participant should be able to:
1. Appreciate the significance oral health professionals play in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of common pathological lesions,
2. Discuss the essential principles utilized in the detection of pathology,
3. Discuss the significance of basic tissue responses to injury or irritation,
4. Given an unknown lesion:
- Identify ‘key’ physical features of oral diseases, and discuss the significance of their appearance,
- Identify ‘key’ historical features of oral disease, and evaluate the significance of various responses,
- Integrate physical and historical features to arrive at a tentative etiology for a wide variety of oral lesions,
- Determine the pathological significance of a wide variety of oral lesions and make decisions regarding appropriate follow up care.
