Course Description:
Soft drinks are a regular staple in many diets. Popular drinks like soda pop, refrigerated teas, energy and sports drinks are fast tracking Americans into diseases that will haunt them for a lifetime. Learn the how and why these beverages are contributing directly to the epidemics of diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and dental caries. Discover which beverages are safe, which ones to avoid and how to combat their erosive potential.
Course objectives:
- Recognize how soft drink consumption has changed through the years
- Understand beverage components
- Test pH values in a variety of non-alcoholic beverages
- Distinguish between pH and titratable acidity
- Learn how beverages are marketed to children and adolescents
- Discover the role of soft drinks in modern degenerative diseases
Anne Nugent Guignon RDH, MPH is international recognized for four decades of Anne contributions to dental hygiene and dentistry. She is a practicing clinician, columnist, feature writer and Senior Consulting Editor for RDH Magazine and has authored textbook chapters on ergonomics and power driven scaling. Anne holds an adjunct faculty position at the University of Texas Dental Branch and has been honored as the 2004 Philips RDH Mentor of the Year and received the 2009 ADHA Colgate Irene Newman Award.

Implementing Preschool Dental Screening
Objective: Inform and prepare the dental hygienist to implement preschool dental screenings that were approved by HB 336
Speaker:
Dr. Julie McKee holds the current position of State Dental Director/Oral Health Program Administrator at the Cabinet for Health and Family Services/ Department for Public Health. Dr McKee has a BS in Biology and graduated from U of L School of Dentistry in 1983.
Through her private practice as a family dentist in rural Kentucky, she knows the need for improved oral health status throughout all ages and demographics of our population. She has over 12 years experiences as a public health director of a multi-county health department that crossed upscale suburban educated populations through the extremely poor, uneducated people.

Meth Use and Abuse in Kentucky and Dental Related Effects
Speaker:
Kim Dean is a graduate of Western Kentucky University with an associate of science degree in dental hygiene, a bachelor of science degree in Community Health, and a Master of Science degree in Health with an emphasis on Public Health Education. Kim has 26 years experience in dental hygiene education. She has taught and coordinated dental hygiene programs in Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, and Arkansas.

Kentucky CE Requirements:
- Registered Dental Hygienists - 30 CE's for Categories 'A', 'B'(and 'C'. For Category 'B', 20 CE's, scientific-based dental related courses in presentation format. For Category 'C', 10 CE's, can be home-study courses.
- Registered Dental Hygienists must successfully complete 2 CE's of HIV & AIDS every 10 years.
- Licenses must be renewed every 2 years.
Kentucky licensed dental hygienists are required under 201 KAR 8:140 to take a course every ten years. The Board adopted the standard from the 1999 Kentucky General Assembly modified requirements for HIV/AIDS educational courses to be completed by health care workers under KRS Chapter 214.610. As a result, the first HIV/AIDS course renewals will be due in 2009. Please note that if you are required to re-take the HIV/AIDS course in 2009, you must complete the approved course by December 31, 2009
Category B continuing education requirements cannot be met by taking any online course, even live web casts. 201 KAR 8:140 classifies the category B course requirement as, "twenty (20) hours of scientific dental based courses given in a classroom presentation format."
